Cape town's hard Life tree

Voy Kay 24 Oct 2020

It's been ages since I took on an African oriented painting again so I thought today was a good moment to continue with that series.
The landscape itself was imaginery yet the skies were for real since I had such view before in Cape town, South Africa, during a winter (their winter, it was August!) sunset in 2012. Mind you, the water is just a lake, not the Atlantic ocean!

Canvas used was a budget 16"x20". Hardest part was getting the sky and water neatly blended with their rich palette of colours. For some reason, the liquid clear did not apply any smoothly on the canvas yet it did also not react wildly to paint thinner! Weird product! 👀
Easiest part .... might be the foliage and the giant pebbles (where the missus thought they were shells at first!).

A little over two hours to create, hopefully a lifetime to enjoy!

I know, I know, this painting is already three times on this site, yet there is a small software problem at the moment with the other two so that nobody can view them or comment on them.
Felix will fix this soon, so that I can take the other two copies off the site, no worries!

Please enjoy!!

Very well done! What kind of brush did you use for the foliage?

Thank you Tom, it felt good after so long!
My African walls (in my bedrooms hallway) can contain 16 African paintings, and so far I have done 10 (worth of displaying!

This is beautiful and would certainly light up a room. Nice job on blending such bold colors, and the tree is very interesting with its soft looking leaves.

Dear Vmehta, so happy for your visit and comment!

For this foliage, I did not use a Bob Ross brush since that would have been a little too wide. This foliage needed accenting so I used a FLAT hog bristled brush of 1/2 inch.
The underpaint was done with leftover tree mixture, the highlights itself with the same dirty brush, tapped into bright red. This needed shy highlighting!

Till next one!

Dear FVG, I wanted to upload two extra pictures to show that sky blending process (very daring and less easy!) but the software did not allow it, Felix has been warned and will fix that soon.

This creation demanded very detailed foliage and only shy highlighted. That's where I use only smaller hog brushes for such, AND bristled, so the tapping is very fit for accenting!

I like the subtle highlights and was curious how you achieved it. Thanks for sharing!

Wonderful job at blending sky! Nice gentle highlights on the trees to show the brightness of light near the sun. Tree outline is great.
